today&#8217;s business world. Companies analyze and evaluate their performance in order to achieve their goals and increase their competitiveness. <strong data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"147\">Key performance indicators (KPIs)<\/strong> are essential for making corporate success measurable.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"310\" data-end=\"611\">Companies define their goals and manage their strategies in a targeted manner by monitoring relevant KPIs. These not only enable the effective use of resources, but also the evaluation of the performance of teams and individuals &#8211; an important lever for continuous improvement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"1163\">Especially in management, decisions are made on the basis of KPIs on a daily basis. This makes their correct interpretation all the more important. It is crucial to distinguish between <strong data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"796\">correlation <\/strong>and <strong data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"815\">causality<\/strong>: While correlation merely describes a statistical relationship (e.g. increasing visitor numbers on a website lead to more sales), causality indicates an actual cause-and-effect relationship. Not every correlation is therefore causal &#8211; a common misconception when dealing with company KPIs.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1397\">The selection of suitable KPIs therefore requires a deep understanding of the data situation and its correlations. This is the only way to define KPIs that truly reflect the actual progress towards the business objective. <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1165\" data-end=\"1397\"><strong>The path to meaningful KPIs<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1847\">A precise definition of the company&#8217;s goals forms the basis. Only then can KPIs be developed that meaningfully measure whether and how these goals are being achieved. As these goals usually relate to different areas, it is essential that specialist departments work together on the KPI definition. Without this exchange, there is a risk of duplication, inaccurate measurements or even contradictory results.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"2066\">The definition process should be clearly documented and regularly reviewed. Ideally, a central team should be appointed to manage all <strong data-start=\"1988\" data-end=\"2012\">actively used KPIs<\/strong> and ensure quality and consistency. <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1849\" data-end=\"2066\"><strong>Technical requirements for KPI recording<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2209\">Without the right IT infrastructure, precise measurement remains a mere wish:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2448\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2210\" data-end=\"2298\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2298\"><strong data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2229\">Data quality<\/strong> (correctness, completeness, up-to-dateness) must be guaranteed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2366\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2366\"><strong data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2328\">Systems and databases<\/strong> must be compatible and networked<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2448\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2448\"><strong data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2398\">Central data storage<\/strong> improves clarity and analysis capability<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2450\" data-end=\"2801\">Suitable <strong data-start=\"2475\" data-end=\"2491\">analysis tools<\/strong> are also required to identify patterns, trends and deviations. This not only simplifies KPI definition, but also improves the tracking and optimization of performance.  <\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2450\" data-end=\"2801\"><strong>KPIs as a compass for data-driven decisions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"3216\"><strong data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2913\">Key performance indicators (KPIs)<\/strong> help companies to pursue their goals in a structured manner, make performance measurable and make well-founded decisions.
